These are mainly known as Swimming Pool Pumps but can be used for other fresh water applications. These pumps often have a filter basket fitted to the front. This is mainly to enable the pump to be installed further away from the water source in a plant room for example or above water level. The filter basket on the front does help to catch large debris from entering the pump head but also is used as a very effective priming tool when first initiating the pump.

*Note* if you are installing a Swimming Pool Pump or Self-Priming Pump as they are also known, above the water level, the pipe work to the pump must not be high vertical drops as you will be unlikely to prime the pump. Instead look to help the water flow and run pipes at a 45 degree angle or less if possible.
